Eight years on from aggressive cancer, Prine sounds in aiguille anatomy for his aboriginal anthology of new songs back 1995's Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. On Fair and Square, Prine takes the assembly reins and plays appropriate into his own arch strengths. The aftereffect is an accomplished set of songs abounding of rootsy amore and discreet wit. Among the stunners are the appropriately circuitous "My Darlin' Hometown," with Alison Krauss, and "Some Humans Ain't Human," which even sneaks in a chic Bush-bash.
